Cage Warriors Fighting Championship are back at the Newport Centre, Wales. When the promotion last visited, the event was headlined by a title fight between former champion, Toni Tauru and Cory Tait, and backed by an exciting back-and-forth middleweight battle as Jack Marshman bounced back to finish Che Mills in the second round. That was then, this is now and Marshman is no longer with the promotion, having recently been pulled from the headline slot in favour of signing with the UFC. In lieu of a middleweight title fight, CWFC 79 is now headlined by former UFC fighter Martin Svensson and everyone’s favourite underdog, Scott Clist.

Despite the rejigging, there are a number of reasons to tune in to CWFC 79 on Friday.

Britain loves an underdog

We won’t go into too much detail now, we’ll save that for the interview coming this week, but Scott Clist might just be the most surprising success story in MMA this year. And that’s not to say he’s not deserving of his position as card headliner, we just never saw it coming. Beating Brad Wheeler and Tim Wilde consecutively looks good on anyone’s resume, and should ‘The Priest’ get through Martin Svensson he may even be the favourite in his next outing…

The emergence of the next CWFC star?

If you’re #UKMMA then you’ve likely been talking about Jack Shore for quite some time. Undefeated as a pro and as an amateur, Shore has gone 14 fights now without tasting defeat, only going to the judges on four occasions. As the competition gets tougher, expect to see an evolving game from the young Welshman, and in front of a global audience on Fight Pass. It’s an unusual situation to think of a 2-0 professional as a prospect, similar to that of flyweight Dominic Wooding, but it’ll interesting to see the development on the CWFC stage.

We didn’t see him first, but you can say you did!
