This Friday night, Garry Tonon continue ins his attempt at being the most active competitor in the Submission grappling scene.
Tonon takes on Justin Rader for the welterweight No-Gi title at Fight To Win Pro 28. In his last outing at Fight To Win Pro, Tonon beat AJ Agazarm in what was a last-minute match up following injuries to both Tonon’s and Agazarm’s scheduled opponents. Even rare for Tonon, it was held in a Gi! This time around, Tonon is back in his comfort zone and will be looking to add the Fight to Win Pro belt to his three EBi belts and numerous other titles he’s racked up so far in his career.
In Justin Rader, Tonon faces one of his toughest opponents to date. Rader is a Rafael Lovato Jr black belt and a seasoned and accomplished black belt in his own right, having won the World No-Gi championships on multiple occasions as a brown and black belt and medalling in the ADCC. Rader’s game is based around getting the takedown and dominating from the top position. Rader could be Tonon’s biggest challenge since he squared off against Rousimar Palhares at Polaris 3 and Radar’s skill set should make this a closely contested match up.
The co-main event sees Radar’s team mate, Jared Dopp face off against Eliot Kelly, who’s returning to Fight To Win Pro after beating Kyle Kingsbury back in January.
Dopp has been impressing fans since he was a purple belt after placing 4th in the ADCC tournament in 2013, beating seasoned black belts along the way. Dopp went on to win a silver medal at the ADCC in 2015 and despite only training BJJ as a hobby whilst working full time, he manages to stay competitive with the very best in the world.
Kelly is a veteran of Fight to Win Pro and is starting to build a name for himself as a super tough competitor and ‘one to watch’ on the submission grappling scene. His IBJFF credentials speak for themselves and Kelly has faced the very best that his division has to offer and has had great success thus far in his career. However, Dopp has shown that he’s amongst the very best grapplers on the planet and is only getting better with age, so Kelly will need to be at his very best to secure the win here.
