The co-main event of UFC on FOX 23 was regarded at the ‘peoples main event’ and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Welterweight’s Jorge Masvidal and Donald Cerrone fought, and left it all out there.
Cerrone looked to be getting the upper hand early in the first round, he was chopping up Masvidal’s leg kick kicks, and occasionally went to the body and even to the head a few times. The most significant part of the round came in the last ten seconds, as Masvidal dropped Cerrone, who was seemingly unconscious for a second, and poured it on. Herb Dean stepped in, a second after, the buzzer went off to signal the end of the round. The referee definitely stepped in before the end of the round, but the fight continued.
Masvidal knew Cerrone was hurt, and pounced in the second, he landed a few hard shots before landing the same right hand that dropped Cerrone in the first. Cerrone hit the deck, tried to get back up while Masvidal swarmed with punches. He did manage to get back to his feet, but Masvidal landed a few vicious shots to body and head and Herb Dean stepped in.
Massive win for Jorge Masvidal, arguably the biggest of his career. Cerrone will have to go back to the drawing board.
