A lightweight bout between Dustin Poirier and Michael Johnson is set to headline UFC Fight Night 94, which takes place from Hidalgo, Texas.
Michael Johnson announced the bout over Instagram.
Poirier (20-4 MMA, 12-3 UFC) decided to make the move up to lightweight following his knockout loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 178, and it was one of the best decisions he could have made. “The Diamond” made his lightweight debut in April of 2015 and stopped Carlos Diego Ferreira in the first round. In his second lightweight bout, Poirier faced Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night 68, and became the first man to stop Medeiros with strikes, again picking up a first round finish. Poirier then faced his toughest test at 155, coming up against Irishman Joseph Duffy. Poirier dominated the fight and walked away with a unanimous decision. Most recently, Poirier fought Bobby Green at UFC 199 and picked up another first round victory, stopping Green with strikes at the 1:52 mark.
Johnson (16-10 MMA, 8-6 UFC) went 1-2 to start his UFC career, before going on a three fight run, defeating Shane Roller, Tony Ferguson and finally Danny Castillo. Johnson’s streak was snapped by Myles Jury, who defeated him by unanimous decision at UFC 155. Following the loss, Johnson faced Reza Madadi, but was submitted in the third round. “The Menace” got back on track with an upset victory over Joe Lauzon, before winning three more over Gleison Tibau, Melvin Guillard and Edson Barboza. Johnson is currently riding a two fight skid, with losses at the hands of Beneil Dariush and most recently Nate Diaz.
UFC Fight Night 94 takes place live from Hidalgo, Texas on September 17, 2016.
