Brazilian Augusto Mendes picked up his first UFC win tonight, and it was in a frantic, exciting, three round fight.

Mendes entered the cage for the first time since his knockout loss to now champion Cody Garbrandt in February of 2016. “Tanquinho” faced Frankie Saenz tonight, and picked up a split decision after a three round fight of the night contender.

Throughout all three rounds, Mendes and Saenz traded punches, with both men being hurt on numerous occasions. The BJJ expert showed how dangerous he can be in the striking department and he rocked Saenz time and again.

The majority of viewers had the fight locked at one round a piece going into the third, scoring it 19-19, and many of them gave the third to Mendes due to his output. Mendes did more damage in the third, keeping up an electric pace and again, hurting Saenz.

Following the win, Mendes’ record improves to 6-1 while Saenz drops to 10-5.
