Craig ‘The Pop Sensation’ Powell (1-1) will be making his return to action at BAMMA 17 on December 3, where he will take on Mike Jones (0-1) in a bantamweight matchup.
This will be Powell’s first fight since picking up his first win as a professional a year ago at BCMMA 13 against Darren Castleton, securing the victory first round triangle choke.
Speaking to The Sprawl, Powell had the following to say about his return to action and his opponent:
“It feels great to be back fighting on BCMMA. BCMMA 17 is looking like a sellout, so to be able to fight in front of so many people is really exciting.
“I don’t know much about my opponent really. I’m guessing he will be like most and not want to stand. I imagine he’ll spend the fight looking for takedowns. Opponents don’t interest me much, a fight is all about how hard I can push myself. I’m wanting to show everyone I am a different level.”
In the past year Powell has become a father for the first time while also continuing his critically acclaimed world tour, performing to any venue willing to let him on stage. Somehow he manages to also fit in being head coach at The Den, which has seen some very talented fighters coming through the ranks. For a lot of guys this would be too much to juggle while still training, but for Powell this is just business as usual.
“I definitely wouldn’t call it ‘a year off’, it’s been tough. No sleep, no routine for diet, shows all over the country etc. It’s as my good friend Ricky Martin always says, I’m ‘Livin’ la Vida Loca’ (living the crazy life). I haven’t stopped training at any point either as I still have my gym in Norfolk and the lads at The Den don’t let me sit back.
“I’m now back in fight camp at BKK with some absolute beasts, so come fight day I will be ready for an absolute war.”
His opponent in December, Mike Jones, like Powell lost his professional debut and will be looking to pick up the first win of his career second time around. In order to pick up that win the Exiles MMA fighter will be stepping into hostile territory with Powell training out of Colchester’s BKK fighters.
BCMMA 17 as always takes place at Colchester’s Charter Hall. Tickets are still available HERE.
