With all the speculation surrounding who was to main event UFC 200, UFC 201 has been left in the shadows with no real news about the event being announced by Dana White or anyone else at the UFC. Until Tuesday night that is.

The main event for UFC 201 has been officially announced as a welterweight title fight between the champion Robbie Lawler and challenger Tyron Woodley.

Both fighters will be coming in to this fight on the back of winning streaks, with Lawler having beat Condit, MacDonald and Hendricks in his last three title fights. Woodley comes in to this fight on the back of wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Dong Hyun Kim, hardly a murders row but deemed enough by the UFC officials to give him a title fight.

There will be plenty of fighters at a 170lbs who will no doubt feel put out by this news, not least Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson who have been taking apart higher ranked opponents than Woodley recently and yet don’t appear to be in title contention just yet.
