Following his fourth round TKO loss to Mark Hunt, surging UFC Heavyweight Derrick Lewis admitted that this fight may be his last.

The announcement came as a huge surprise, as the 32-year-old was riding a six fight win streak prior to the loss, and was in the running for the next title shot. With victories over the likes of Gabriel Gonzaga, Roy Nelson and Travis Browne.

Lewis’ reasoning for his possible retirement was mainly a back injury, and also the fact that he doesn’t like putting his family through the stress of him fighting.

Was I shocked when I first heard the heavyweight contender say he was likely done? Yes, but after thinking about it, it doesn’t seem that far fetched. Lewis always has been somebody that I thought could easily just walk away from the sport. Well, not easily, but easier than others.

I think this retirement could be very real, as not only can back injuries be career ending but Lewis has three children, and a fiancee at home, which no doubt adds more stress to his fighting career and their lives when he fights.
