Former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Champion BJ Penn returned to the cage on Sunday night at UFC Phoenix, and it didn’t end well for him.
Many fans feared BJ was past his prime and was going to be in for a rough night against a much younger and fresher Yair Rodriguez, and they were right. “The Prodigy” lost the first round, arguably 10-8, before being TKO’d less than 30-seconds into the second frame.
Penn released a statement to his website BJPenn.com following the fight, saying this:
“Congrats to Yair Rodriguez for a great performance, I had a great camp and great weight cut, no excuses.”
It is unclear at this time whether Penn will return to the cage.
