In the main event at last night’s Submission Underground 3, Conor McGregor’s ‘grappling coach’ and Marcelo Garcia black belt, Dillon Danis needed the overtime rounds to beat a tough opponent in AJ Agazarm after struggling to finish the Gracie Barra black belt over the eight minute round time.
Danis secured the win with the fastest escape time of the two. After the match, Danis had some choice words for record breaking former UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, with the Jiu Jitsu competitor calling Jones “a fucking bitch” before walking off.
In the co-main event, Antonio Carlos Jr pulled off the shock of the night after landing a flying triangle to submit Garry Tonon. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Tonon tap in a submission only competition, but when you look at the calibre of competitor that Carlos Jr has submitted previously, it shouldn’t have been too surprising to see him get the edge in this match. However, Tonon has previously beaten some of the world’s best and was the favourite coming in to this match.
Former UFC featherweight contender Chad Mendes made his mark in the submission grappling scene with a victory over the eccentric, yet very talented Jeff Glover. Neither fighter could secure the win during the regulation time so the match went to overtime, where by Mendes was able to secure the win with the fastest submission time.
‘The King’ Gordon Ryan continued his good form in 2017 with a submission win via armbar/triangle combination over a late replacement in Joe Baize. According to Ryan’s coach, John Danaher, the Renzo Gracie competitor had limited himself to only armbar and triangle submissions coming in to this match, which is a step away from the leg lock attacks we’ve previously seen Ryan utilise so well.
